• Archbishop Brunett on Health Care Reform

Some of you might have seen an op-ed piece in the Seattle Times by Sam Sperry last week. Unfortunately, it contained many errors. Archbishop Brunett wrote a clarifying column that was published in today’s edition of the Seattle Times (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...17brunett.html).

After reading the Archbishop’s guest column, please consider writing to the Seattle Times. It would also be an excellent time to contact Senators Murray and Cantwell about the health care reform debate. As Archbishop Brunett said in his column, “The intent of our advocacy on this issue is to promote universal access to health care and to preserve the long-standing federal policy prohibiting federal funding of abortion.” I am also attaching a chart from the USCCB that compares the language of laws which the Senate passed on Sunday (Dec. 13) with the language of the Nelson-Hatch-Casey amendment which the Senate tabled last week. Our senators need to hear how Catholics support universal access to health care while maintaining the decades-long ban on federal funding of abortions.

Thank you for being advocates of the poor and vulnerable,

    Jim
