• Support the General Assistance Unemployable Program (GAU)

The General Assistance Unemployable (GAU) program is a lifeline for single adults that are unable to work due to a physical or mental disability. The state grants up to $339 in temporary cash assistance and pays for medical benefits. Grants are given for six months to low-income individuals who are recovering from either a temporary disability or who ultimately are deemed to be permanently disabled and unable to work. Many return to the workforce and some ultimately qualify for federal disability benefits (SSI). Currently more than 20,000 people receive GAU. GAU is a vital part of our community's safety net.

Some of the most vulnerable people in our community could end up on the streets if the Senate's budget proposal is enacted. The GAU program was cut in last year's biennial legislative session. The budget that the Senate has passed eliminates the cash assistance grant of $339/month, substituting a $50/month stipend and providing housing services. The Senate budget also limits medical benefits to 12 months in any 24 month period. Unfortunately, because of the shortage of low-income housing units available, GAU recipients may not be able to find housing. Cutting GAU will simply transfer costs to other parts of the system such as emergency rooms, homeless shelters and jails.

Catholic housing authorities throughout the state provide housing and support services to many residents who rely on GAU to fund their housing, medical services and basic needs. The funding reduction of the residents' cash grants and medical benefits could hinder our ability to serve homeless single adults.
