• Safe Environment Important Dates

    CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

    Dear Pastors and Principals:

Once again, I want to thank you for your ongoing support of our “Safe Environment” programs across the 70 schools here in the Archdiocese of Seattle. When the auditors from the United States Catholic Conference Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People came to audit our compliance with the Dallas Charter, they praised Archbishop Brunett and our local Church leadership for the thoroughness of our efforts.

Similar to last year, there are some key deadlines I am establishing in the Catholic Schools Department again this year, as we all move towards completing the annual “Safe Environment” policies in our Catholic schools:
    • May 1st, 2010: I will begin reviewing with the ever hard-working Shawna McMahon the status of each of our 70 schools.
    • May 15th, 2010: I will be reviewing the actual roster that shows which schools have fully complied with the “Safe Environment” policies and which have not. I will be distributing the lists of those schools to the regional superintendents. They will be reviewing these lists and contacting the principals for clarification and correction of building information.
    • May 31st, 2010 - All Safe Environment requirements must be completed for all employees and any volunteers with ongoing unsupervised contact with minors or vulnerable adults. This includes background checks, signed policies and completed training.
      • Both school verifications must be received by the Safe Environment Program by this date (the signed Verification Form and the numbers submitted in SETA Net).
    • June 1st ,2010: For any school lacking documentation under the requirements of “Safe Environment”, I will be contacting the pastor for clarification.
    • July 1st, 2010: Due date for the Archdiocese of Seattle in filing its documentation on our “Safe Environment” programs with the United States Catholic Conference’s Committee for the Protection of Children.
    • June 15th, 2010: For any school still lacking documentation under the requirements of “Safe Environment”, I will be contacting the pastor personally during Priest Days at Ocean Shores.
Shawna McMahon will be joining us for the next Principals’ Meeting on Thursday, May 13th, 2010, at The Palisades, so you can touch base with her personally at that time. You can also contact her directly at Shawna.McMahon@seattlearch.org for any necessary assistance you may need in meeting these calendar benchmarks.

Again, I want to thank you for making our Catholic Schools a safe environment for the education of the total child.

    Many Easter Blessings!

    Yours in Christ,

    Most Reverend Joseph J. Tyson
    Auxiliary Bishop
    Superintendent of Catholic Schools
