• Department of Health - Mumps Outbreak Update

Sent on behalf of Trang Kuss, DOH. If you have questions/concerns, contact Trang at oicpschools@doh.wa.gov

Due to the ongoing mumps outbreak in our state, you and staff at your school may need to quickly provide your immunization status or show proof of mumps immunity. Please share this information, as appropriate, with staff at your school.

    Here are some options:

    • Sign up for MyIR. MyIR allows you to manage your immunization records securely online. Once you register, you can access the records any time you need them. This can all be done without an extra trip to your healthcare provider. Go to www.doh.wa.gov/immsrecords to sign up.
    • Contact your healthcare provider. Find documentation of MMR vaccine from your childhood healthcare provider or, if you’ve been pregnant, your prenatal care provider to ask about blood testing for mumps immunity or MMR vaccination after delivery.
    • Get vaccinated. If you haven’t been vaccinated or are unable to show proof of immunity, get one dose of MMR vaccine. You may need a second dose if there’s an outbreak at your school. School nurses are considered healthcare providers at higher risk and should get two doses of MMR vaccine.
    • Provide proof of immunity. Three options for providing proof of immunity: 1) documentation of MMR vaccination, 2) if you’ve had mumps infection, provide history of the disease verified by a healthcare provider, 3) if you were born before 1957, you’re considered immune and are not recommended to get MMR vaccine. However, if there’s a mumps outbreak at your school, MMR vaccination should be considered for persons born before 1957 who do not have other evidence of immunity and might be exposed. Talk with your healthcare provider to determine what you should do to be protected.
    • Get tested for immunity. You can get tested to check for immunity from prior vaccination or infection, but a blood test may not be a reliable way to show immunity, so you may still need to get MMR vaccine.

Please send an email to oicpschools@doh.wa.gov if you have more questions.
