• Good News from the Missions Office - August 2011

    East Africa
From Catholic Relief Services (with a bit of adapting) we place updates and resources on the famine and drought in East Africa on our website, www.seattlearchdiocese.org/missions. Please share/distribute as you feel works best for your community.

    Labor Day 2011 Statement
The annual Labor Day 2011 statement from the U.S. Catholic bishops should be available next week at their website, and we’ll post it on our website (along with any related resources we discover). Look for the focus areas to be on the broken economy, a lack of trust in institutions, and a message of hope in how we can rebuild with attention to the inherent dignity of the worker.

Two Feet of Love in Action – Charity and Justice handout and guide
After extensive testing "in the field" and feedback from parishes around the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Dept. of Justice, Peace and Human Development has revised the "two feet" model which has been used for years to describe two different, but complementary, ways of putting faith in action. The revisions better reflect the language of Pope Benedict XVI in Deus Caritas Est and Caritas in Veritate.
    • A brief, 2-page handout of the Two Feet of Love in Action
    • A Guide for Facilitators including an extensive session outline
The revisions and guide in different formats will eventually be placed on the USCCB website, but for now you can find the initial documents at our website: www.seattlearchdiocese.org/missions.

    Catholic Campaign for Human Development
CCHD’s grants and justice education resources are supported by an annual collection in U.S. parishes; in this archdiocese it is a combined collection called Build Hopeand will be held on September 10/11. Please support! Information on our current grantees and application processes can be found at our website; CCHD resources on education for justice can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd.

    JustFaith
JustFaith programs this coming year: if you/your community has not yet registered for any of the excellent programs from JustFaith Ministries, please consider doing so – it’s not too late! For instance, there has been increased interest in “Living Solidarity: Government, the Federal Budget and the Common Good.” And coming out soon is “In the Spirit of St. Francis and the Sultan: Muslims and Christians Working Together for the Common Good.” And of course the “basic” JustFaith program, Catholic and ecumenical versions, is one of the best formation programs we have ever come across.
Check them all out at www.justfaith.org. Our office stands ready to offer resources and financial assistance, and can also connect you with JustFaith leaders/consultants in this archdiocese.
Fall Gathering: Graduates – stay tuned for more information on the October 29 event on “Prison Ministry and Reform” (to be held at a north Seattle parish).

    New Lineup!
There are some changes here at the Missions Office: Erin Kate Scheopner will be moving on as she pursues a graduate degree in International History (Empires, Colonialism & Globalization) at the London School of Economics. Erin Kate has worked for the past three years in the Missions Office, and is handing off this position to Kelly Hickman. Kelly joins us from Seattle University’s School of Theology & Ministry where she is an alum and worked as the administrative assistant. While Erin Kate will be missed, we are excited to welcome Kelly to the team.

With thanks for your service and commitment,

“A Eucharist which does not pass over into the concrete practice of love is intrinsically fragmented.”‖ (Pope Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est, 14)
