Standards Based Assessment
On Tuesday, April 29, we hosted Aubrey Scheopner, Ph.D., for an afternoon session on Standards Based Assessment. Two session goals offered us an opportunity to:
- Review of the research on effective grading practices and standards-based grading, including supports that facilitate and change the barriers to implementation
- Explore standards based grading samples
- Hear from a teacher who has been through the implementation process

This session was well attended, and the overriding evaluation comment from all participants was, “What are we doing at the Archdiocese to facilitate such a move?” We would like to pull together a small group of principals and teachers to develop the components necessary to eventually develop a standards-based reporting process that can be accessed through PowerSchool, or used as a template for other platforms with the following considerations:
1. As we move to standards within our curricular reviews (Religion in the fall and English Language Arts in the winter), we hope to offer Religion and ELA sections in preparation for implementation in 2014 - 2015.
2. Identifying professional development for our principals and teachers as to best practices in implementing this change and the impact it makes on instruction and communication with our students and parents.

Pastors, Pastoral Coordinators and Principals:
The archdiocese has established a call center for those who want answers about tax identity theft. Please direct individuals to call 1-866-329-5954 for information. And please continue to tell them to visit the website for steps they can take to protect themselves.
The archdiocese will be sending parishes and schools an informational DVD next week for use by staff and volunteers. This video also will be available on the website and contains reliable steps that may be taken. While many of you may have individuals in your communities who are experts in related fields and who are offering resources and advice, we ask that you please submit such information for review by our attorneys and tax advisors prior to distributing any materials or posting it on your website.
Thank you for your assistance and be assured of our continued efforts to address this problem.
Please be assured that we are taking appropriate steps to determine whether or not a breach of systems within the Archdiocese (including Parishes and Schools) or systems of our vendors has occurred or if there is some other source of the problem. Once this determination is made, we will immediately take appropriate action to address the situation. We have hired a forensic security firm, Stroz Friedberg, to assist us in analyzing and repairing the affected systems and are working with the FBI and IRS to address the issue.

Update as of 3/14/2014: Phone Scams
IRS phone scams are on the rise, and they can take on a variety of forms. Some fraudsters call pretending to be with the IRS, telling the taxpayer he/she owes money. They can threaten the taxpayer with arrest, loss of a driver’s license or in some cases deportation. In many cases this is followed up with a call from someone claiming to be with the local police department or DMV. Others scammers call fishing for personal information like Social Security numbers by telling the taxpayer she’s owed a big refund — she just needs to verify certain personal details.
The IRS recommends if you receive one of these phone calls, turn around and call the IRS at 800-829-1040. And if you know for certain that you don’t owe money, call to report the incident at 800-366-4484.
The Chancery Leadership updated the IRS Tax Fraud Scam Urgent Notice PDF which was posted on March 14, 2014 at 3:30 p.m.Attached please find a letter from the Archbishop and a memo from Mary Santi that has been sent to Priests, Deacons, and Pastoral Leaders. The Archbishop has shared his sentiments and expresses his thanks for your patience and support during this troubling experience.
