• New WSCC statement - Seeking the Common Good

    Life, Justice and Peace Contacts,

With so much in the news now about the continuing economic crisis, I want to tell you about a new resource available from the Washington State Catholic Conference. It is titled “Seeking the Common Good” and could be useful as a bulletin insert, especially with the special session of the state legislature set to begin on Nov. 28.

The WSCC statement is available in both English and Spanish. In it, the Bishops of Washington State write, “Our leaders are once again confronted with the complex task of determining the appropriate level of government services and the amount of revenue necessary to address the needs of Washingtonians.” The Bishops encourage Catholics and all citizens to carefully consider the impact of social service cuts on our brothers and sisters in need, and consider the proportionality and justice of tax systems which place heavy burdens on people living in poverty. In conclusion, the Bishops call on the Catholic community and all citizens to become involved in developing a fair and equitable system of taxation.

This November marks the 25th anniversary of the U.S. Bishops statement on the economy: Economic Justice for All. The Archdiocese has prepared an insert, The Economic Crisis and
Catholic Social Principles, that presents the principles of the document, several key quotes and a table comparing a number of economic indicators from 1986 and where our country stands today.

    In Christ’s peace,
    Jim

“Violence never again! War never again! Terrorism never again! In the name of God, may every religion bring upon the earth Justice and Peace, Forgiveness and Life, Love.” ~Pope Benedict XVI, October 27, 2011 in Assisi

"I think the world today is upside down. ... We have no time for our children, we have no time for each other; there is no time to enjoy each other. In the home begins the disruption of the peace of the world." ~Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta
