• School Supplies Savings Project

Many big-box office supply stores are currently having clearance sales to make room on their shelves for merchandise for the new school year. This is an opportunity to save big! Next, they will begin advertising new “loss-leader” items at drastic savings in July, and continue through September. Please refer to the “School Supplies Savings” flyer for more details and the facebook page that broadcasts deals as they are discovered.
    School Supplies Savings Project

    Outline/Overview
A friend of education recently reached out to the Fulcrum Foundation to share a simple method he has developed for procuring school supplies at greatly reduced prices. Douglas Naimo of Portland, Oregon found that by taking advantage of big box office supply store specials, school faculty and staff can purchase a significant part of their annual school supplies for a fraction of everyday prices.

Doug has formed a group on Facebook titled Million Pencil Push Project, which helps illustrate the spirit of his project and how he “spreads the word.” A typical posting is included below:

... Office Depot Glue for $0.01 with double the minimum OR classroom quantities for teachers

Feel free to share this email with your staff and friends of education. See more at OfficeMax - Weekly Store Ads

Doug’s purchasing method is simple and is outlined below.
    1. Bottom Faculty and staff are encouraged to focus their annual school supply budget on purchases in July, August and September. This is the time period when Office Depot heavily advertises loss leader items at 1, 5, 10 and 25 cents each. Office Depot has been found to have the best policy for teachers, but Office Max and Staples are other reliable resources.

    2. Ads can be shared with fellow teachers and those in other schools to maximize the opportunity (through email, online groups, and other messaging).

    3. Purchases should be focused on great deals on very basic items that are heavily used during the school year. Examples of items are:
    a. Pencils
    b. Paper
    c. Pens
    d. Art Supplies

    4. Make friends with store management for savings year round.
