Dear Life, Justice and Peace Contacts,

Advocacy Convening Change – The Advocacy Convening planned for Aug. 18 is cancelled. Instead three Regional Advocacy Convenings in November and December will be organized. The Regional Convenings will build a regional network to advocate for the poor and prepare advocates for the upcoming 2013 Legislative Session and the March 22nd Catholic Advocacy Day. We will send out Regional Convening dates, times, and locations as soon as they are finalized. We apologize for any inconvenience this shift in Convenings may have caused, and appreciate your continued interest and support of advocacy.

Faithful Citizenship Parish Guide Now Available

At the USCCB Publishing website, you can now pre-order the Parish Guide to Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, which will be available for shipping in mid-June. This guide is intended for parish leaders to educate parishioners about how to form their consciences and live out the call to participate in political life. It includes a monthly planning calendar, ideas for how parishes can form consciences, and a comprehensive appendix of resources. Order the Parish Guide now. Other resources for Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship are available at www.faithfulcitizenship.org. If your parish would like to request a speaker this fall on the elections, please let me know.

Torture is an Intrinsic Evil - A Catholic Study Guide for a One-Session Workshop is an educational resource that consists of one 90-minute session workshop geared to help Catholics wrestle with the moral and practical issues that surround torture. It is a particularly useful resource for Torture Awareness Month (June). While it may be difficult for your parish to arrange a workshop for this June, now is the perfect time to make plans for a fall workshop. “Torture is an Intrinsic Evil” includes a workshop outline, which is available at: http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-acti...tudy-guide.pdf. In addition, the study is accompanied by video clips which can be viewed or downloaded at http://www.nrcat.org/intrinsic-evil. They can also be purchased on DVD for $10.00 at the same site. The video clips include: Dr. Stephen M. Colecchi, Director of the Office of International Justice and Peace, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and Matthew Alexander, a former Air Force interrogator.
