• Archbishop Alex Brunett Appointment

Dear Brother Priests, Pastoral Coordinators, and Staff,

You have most likely heard by now that the Holy Father has appointed Archbishop Alex Brunett Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Oakland, effective the day Bishop Cordileone is installed as Archbishop of San Francisco, October 4. Archbishop Brunett accepted the appointment with his typical and enthusiastic willingness to do whatever is asked of him by the Church.

Since he has been retired almost two years now, this appointment is, of course, somewhat out-of-the-ordinary. However, as you know, Archbishop Brunett is a man of immense energy and talent, and even in retirement he has kept a vigorous schedule and has continued to be of immense help here in the Archdiocese. This temporary appointment as Administrator of the Diocese of Oakland is a sign of Pope Benedict’s deep respect and confidence in his experience and competence as a leader. Having been bishop of two dioceses, the Archbishop has shown himself to be a good and caring shepherd of the flock entrusted to his care. I’m sure the Holy Father knows that the Church in Oakland will be in capable, loving hands.

The Archbishop will be moving to Oakland soon, on a temporary basis, but will continue to visit Seattle regularly. I’ve assured him that all of us will be praying for him and wish him well as he serves the people of Oakland while they await the appointment of a new bishop.

Blessings and prayers for all of you!

    Sincerely in Christ,
    Archbishop Sartain
