Seattle University Professor Patrick Kelly, S.J., speaks on his new book, “Catholic Perspectives on Sports: From Medieval to Modern Times” at two events in March. Fr. Kelly's book is about how Catholics have engaged in play and sports from the medieval period to the present.
“Christians in the medieval and early modern periods thought play was important in a virtuous life, because one shouldn't be studying or working all the time”, he said. “Thomas Aquinas, in fact, believed that play was closely related to spiritual values.”
In these talks, Fr. Kelly, a former college football player, will focus on how the experience of playing sports today is related to human flourishing and openness to transcendent values for young people .
Fr. Kelly will discuss his book on Friday, March 8, at 7 p.m. at Elliott Bay Book Company (1521 10th Avenue, Seattle) and on Saturday, March 9, on the Seattle University campus at 2:15 p.m. in Pigott 304. For the on-campus book discussion, held in conjunction with the Search for Meaning Book Festival, you will need to obtain a free, general session ticket available through http://www.searchformeaning.us. No ticket is needed for the Elliott Bay discussion. These events are free and open to the public.
