The Educational Technology Support Center of Puget Sound ESD is pleased to partner with Pacific Lutheran University in hosting a thought-provoking talk by Dr. S. Craig Watkins:

Designing Connected Learning Environments

Dr. S. Craig Watkins studies young people’s social and digital media behaviors. In the summer of 2012, he worked with a high school teacher and his research team to create a new kind of learning experience for students from a low-income high school in Central Texas. After working with the school for nine months, Dr. Watkins and his team began to notice something: that even though the school offered students a variety of media technologies and opportunities to create digital media artifacts, some students still remained disengaged, de-motivated, and unable to realize the promise of the digital future.

In this talk, Watkins discusses the challenges the school faced, despite offering state-of-the-art technology, and how his team designed what they call a “connected learning” environment to realize the promise of digital media. The pilot and the findings it generated raises a number of intriguing matters regarding digital literacy, the digital divide, curriculum design, and the future of learning.

This will be a day-long event dedicated to sharing experiences and discovering new products that can help transform your classrooms. DigitalEdge Showcase
May 28, 2013; 9:00 am – 3:30 pm

This showcase will introduce participants to the technology solutions that can transform a classroom to a 21st Century interactive learning environment. Watch demonstrations and presentations of classroom equipment that was competitively bid for the DigitalEdge purchasing program. Engage in hands-on activities and talk to the vendor/presenters about the products, their features, and how they can change learning. The format for this event is hands-on.
