FOR NEW SCHOOLS INTERESTED IN DESTINY
April 2012
Dear Principals and Librarians,
Follett Software Company and the Catholic Schools Department are continuing their partnership in learning, along with the Washington Learning Source and Puget Sound ESD, to provide DESTINY, a web-based library service to schools in the Archdiocese of Seattle. We are now ready to move into the implementation phase with the fifth group of interested schools. You may want to explore this web-based library service at www.wlsdestiny.org.
Welcome to year 5 of this Archdiocesan Consortium! The greatest gift of this library consortium continues to be working with the CSLA (Catholic School Librarians Association). I am grateful for the generous mentoring shared by the thirty-two DESTINY librarians who have been so gracious to offer support and wisdom to the next group entering into DESTINY. You will find so many resources for your school librarians at the CSLA website plus additional resources for DESTINY preparation. Please bookmark for your quick reference: http://library.stjosephsea.org/csla.htm
The DESTINY and PowerSchool Consortiums are now able to link common data with resource support. The Catholic Schools Department works with Tom Howley at PS ESD and Steve Deibert, School Data Power Solutions, to coordinate this linkage with each interested school.
If your school desires to move to DESTINY at this time, please read through this document, follow up on any questions that remain, sign the document at the bottom of the last page, and FAX the commitment form to Sandra Barton Smith at the Catholic Schools Department by Friday, May 18th.
STEP 1: The Catholic Schools Department is working with Follett Software Company for the full library software package. (Primary contact: Stan Winters)
- Interested schools will submit their commitment form to CSD by May 18, 2012.
- CSD will organize a confirmed list of schools joining DESTINY and the yearly costs associated with DESTINY. Follett Software Company will assist each school that may be working with older versions of library software products to ensure a successful conversion.
- Catholic Schools Department will collect each school’s portion of the bill based on an agreed upon date and the Catholic Schools Department will send in the full amount to Follett and PS ESD annually.
- Schools will not receive any bills from Follett or Puget Sound ESD. DESTINY schools will be responsible to the Archdiocese for the discounted support/licensing costs.
STEP 2: The Catholic Schools Department works with Puget Sound ESD (Renton site) for the web hosting of DESTINY. (Primary contact: Tom Howley)
- Each new school will have a first year $200.00 implementation cost for the transfer of data and an annual web hosting fee of $300.00.
- The Catholic Schools Department will collect each school’s initial cost and annual web hosting fee and will send in the full amount to PS ESD. Our annual renewal date is September 1st of each year.
Breakdown for the DESTINY Program:
This DESTINY package provides the librarian with all of the Library Management functionality, the “Title Peek” feature which adds the pictures of the covers of the books, but also includes two curriculum resources. These resources are “databases” that can have an impact on all students and all curriculum areas every day. These are:
- WebPath Express: This “bundle” provides your students with access to more than 100,000 top quality, professionally selected websites. These sites are integrated into your library collection, so that when students search their library they will find the books and resources in their library, and also will find these professionally selected websites. This greatly expands the materials that your school makes available to their students, and all of this is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- State Standards Searching: This “bundle” service allows users to search their Destiny library collection, and our database of professionally selected websites for information that is aligned to specific Washington State Standards, down to the GLE level. This can be used by teachers looking for supplemental materials to support lesson plans/units, and by librarians collaborating with teachers.

In short, the Follett DESTINY implementation timeline would involve:
- Preparation and Planning time: From now until June 1st participating librarians will need to “close” their books as they end their school year. The 3 Follett Planning forms which need to be completed are located on the CSLA website and/or available through the CSD. Please start filling out these forms electronically and email to Sandy Smith on or before Wednesday, May 30th.
- Data Extraction: Follett will provide a Utility tool that will extract all of your current data out of your Circulation Plus/Catalog Plus database. On or before Friday, June 1st you would run this utility to extract your data. You would send this data electronically to Puget Sound ESD, where it will be uploaded into the DESTINY application. We work with Tom Howley for this step, and Tom will expect all data on or before Monday, June 4th in order to have 5 working days to extract the data and upload it to the web hosting at PS ESD.
- One day on-line training: Please hold Wednesday, June 13th for the implementation training for the lead librarians of your schools. It is a ½ day Follett webinar and Interact access is required. Please bring a laptop or request to borrow one from the CSD. This training will cover DESTINY functionality from A to Z. After this training you should be ready to function in your new DESTINY library. After the webinar training, there will be time to share information from other DESTINY schools – Wednesday, June 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided. J Location: Small Isaac Orr Conference Room, The Chancery, Seattle.
| Follett Software Company would provide: | All functional tech support. This would include unlimited telephone, email, fax support. Any questions related to the software would go to Follett Technical Support. |
| Puget Sound ESD would provide: | All hosting responsibilities. They would host your library data; perform all backups, updates, any necessary trouble shooting. |
| Catholic Schools Department would provide: | Serve as liaison between the different agencies when needed. Act as clearing house for billing. |
New schools please note: Follett and PS ESD will prorate the services as necessary since implementation is occurring in June. The consortium annual renewal date is July 1st each year and the CSD will bill member schools directly for their portion of the costs and fees each September. Non-payment of support may result in termination of DESTINY services and/or Puget Sound ESD services.
***If current DESTINY schools have new personnel who need to be trained for DESTINY, there is a training day scheduled for Wed, June 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with a cost of $50.00 per school. We are happy to help support the new librarians!
Thank you for your flexibility and understanding. If Nack or I can be of further assistance, please contact us directly.
Respectfully,
