• Northwest Catholic Educational Leadership Institute

    Participants,

On behalf of our Educational Leadership Advisory Council, we wish to extend our warm welcome to you as a participant in the seventh Northwest Catholic Educational Leadership Institute. The College of Education at Seattle University and the Office for Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Seattle are excited about this professional development and learning opportunity, “IMPLEMENTING COMMON CORE THROUGH UNDERSTANDING BY DESIGN” facilitated by Dr. Susan Abelein, Andrea Stojanov and their colleagues from Catapult Learning.

We hope that you will find the Institute content stimulating, relevant, and applicable. Networking possibilities abound, as participants will be present from the Diocese of Boise and Yakima and the Archdiocese of Seattle and Portland.

Logistics: The three-day conference agenda for the institute is attached for your review. Please note that some breakouts at this year’s Institute will be held in a building adjacent to Campion Hall, where the main room is. Chardin Hall is accessed by walking down a small hill. If you have any mobility concerns, and you will be attending a breakout in Chardin, please let Annique Atwater (atwaterm@seattleu.edu) at Seattle University know as soon as possible. We will try to make any necessary arrangements or accommodations.
Note: The content area breakout sessions will be printed on your nametag at the institute. We are unable to accommodate any changes to the content area breakout session you signed up for. Do not attend a breakout that you are not signed up for.

Technology: For all, please note that there are very few power outlets in Campion Ballroom or the Chardin classrooms so be sure to charge your devices before arrival. We also ask that you not run any power cords across walkways as they are a safety hazard.
    • Dr. Abelein has requested that all ELA participants bring laptops or tablets with Microsoft Word, or compatible application, and Internet access – you will be provided with Wi-Fi log-ins and passwords at registration. ELA participants should also bring the readings or texts that you intend to use during the first unit of the school year, and you are welcome to bring the prior year’s lesson plans to relate to these readings or texts.
    • Math participants can bring laptops or tablets but they are not necessary to the work. Math participants will also be provided with Wi-Fi log-ins and passwords.

Parking: Due to the size of this year’s conference, parking passes cannot be issued to each person who requested parking because SU does not have enough parking to accommodate everyone. We strongly encourage you to arrange carpools if you are driving in each day. Commuting participants will park in Murphy Garage at 11th St and E. Cherry (see attached campus map). We have requested that an attendant be present at the Murphy booth all three mornings, until 8:30am, to distribute daily parking passes. If there is no attendant at the booth, you will need to drive to the Visitor’s Lot at 12th St and E. Marion and get your parking pass from the attendant at the booth. You may park in any garage on campus with the parking pass, but Murphy is closest to the Institute. We hope to notify commuters on Monday if a student will be able to staff the Murphy booth. The Visitor’s booth is always staffed. Please allow extra time in the event you have to travel to the Guest lot first. If you arrive after 8:30am, go directly to the Visitor’s lot to pick up your parking pass.
NB: If you are staying in a hotel near campus and requested parking, note that these passes do not permit you to park at SU over night. You will need to park your vehicle elsewhere after 8:00pm. Please contact your hotel about parking options they have available.

Opportunity to Earn Additional Clock Hours Provided by the Office for Catholic Schools:
We are excited to be able to provide three valuable books to prepare for this year’s Leadership Institute at Seattle University. To encourage participants to read The Core Six book in advance of the Institute, we are providing 6 additional clock hours to those who go online and respond to questions about the book by Friday, June 21. Please click here to access the questions. Clock hour certificates will be sent by July 30 to all who submit the reflections.
