English as a New Language

Dear Principals,

Does your school have students who speak a language other than English at home? Would you like to see an increase in the ESL resources available in your school? University of Notre Dame ACE’s English as a New Language program (ACE-ENL) is dedicated to helping Catholic school teachers build expertise in teaching English as a second language. Here is an overview of our program:


WHAT WE OFFER:

• 18 graduate credit hours from the University of Notre Dame leading to a license of “Teachers of Students of a New Language” in the State of Indiana
• Reciprocal licenses for ESL and ELL available in most states
• A requirement that participants share their developing expertise within their school communities and present a professional development seminar to their colleagues

WHO WE INVITE TO PARTICIPATE:

• Catholic school teachers and administrators
• ACE graduates teaching in foreign countries

REQUIREMENTS:

• Participants must be able to spend two weeks on campus at the University of Notre Dame during the middle of July. (Actual dates: July 8 – 23, 2010)
• Participants must take two on-line classes in both the fall and spring semesters after their two-week summer experience at the University of Notre Dame
• Participants must hold a bachelor’s degree and teaching license from any state if they wish to add an endorsement to their teaching license
• Participants must teach at least one student for whom English is not a native language

COST:

• $9500, which includes 18 credit hours and room and board
• Scholarships are available to those who do not qualify for federal funds, who are in financial need and/or to reward commitment to Catholic schools
• The average tuition bill for participants on scholarships is between $3500 and $4500
• Many students qualify as AmeriCorps volunteers and are able to go through the program at little to no cost
• Title II or Title III funds and AmeriCorps grants may be used to pay for the program
