Sea-03 Innovations in Catholic Education: The Garden Project
This year, we received an Innovations in Catholic Education Award for our school garden project. Via our school garden project at Assumption Catholic School, we not only educate children and their families about growing and eating healthy vegetables and fruits, but by means of the sales of our produce, we provide necessary items for our sister school in Cambodia. All of this is done within the context of membership with Common Threads Farm and School Garden Collective where we work in solidarity with other schools in our local community to promote sustainable growing techniques and healthy food. This service project allows our students hands-on opportunities to be Active Global Citizens, one of our School-Wide Learning Expectations.

Sea-08 21st Century Skills: Building Character and Knowledge

Participants will explore the interrelated images and figures through which Revelation speaks of the inexhaustible mystery of God. Sacred Art expresses in images the same Gospel message that Scripture communicates by word. Participants will understand that sacred art, by its very nature, communicates the infinite beauty of God in works made by human hands. Participants will learn that genuine sacred art draws people to adoration, prayer, and to the love of God; the mystery celebrated is imprinted in the heart’s memory and is then expressed in the new life of the faithful.

Sea-11 Service Learning in Catholic Grade Schools
What is service vs. service learning at the K-8 level?
A joint project with sixth grade students and Seattle University's MIT program to explore youth homelessness. Our learning target: Sixth grade students will be able to teach our parents and peers about youth homelessness in our Seattle community. Through lesson plans, journal entries, pictures, and videos of student presentations, we share our student's stories. Additionally, we will also present our reflections as we continue to hone and improve the project. We invite you to interact with us and with one another as you participate in some of the student activities and take time to consider your own implementation questions and ideas.

Strategies for developing reading comprehension and fluency by teaching vocabulary, parts of speech, and text chunking using the Slingerland® Adaptation of the Orton-Gillingham Approach. Presenters will explain and demonstrate the Reading Component of the Slingerland® Approach, including:
1. Preparation for Reading: This step takes single words and words in a phrase directly from the material used in any reading lesson. These are used to teach new vocabulary, concepts, and difficult words.
2. Reading from the Book: This process empowers readers as they approach the complex figure-background perception and phrase-level comprehension needed to be fluent readers.

Sea-23 Faith Formation Through the Active Parenting Program
School difficulties are sometimes rooted in counter-productive parenting styles. Offering resources to parents can improve in-school behavior and be appreciated by parents. The Active Parenting programs have replaced PET and STEP as the most comprehensive approach to parenting skills building.

This class will examine themes associated with social justice with middle school and 9th and 10th graders. The book, Heavens Child by Caroline Flor, a member of St. Cecilia Parish, was used in a pilot class last year at St. Cecilia Catholic School. The author stressed critical thinking as students discussed the content of the book in a book club/literature circle.

Sea-25 Mock Government - Let's Get Excited about Civics!

Sea-31 Meeting Jesus Where it Matters: Helping Students Connect Faith with ServicePresentation and panel discussion based on the charisma of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. This session will assist teachers and staff in deepening their understanding of how to integrate “service to the most vulnerable and poor” as important learning topics in a school’s faith formation curriculum. The panel will include St. Vincent de Paul volunteers who work in our local Parish communities making home visits and ministering to the needs of the poor and marginalized in Parish neighborhoods. Their stories, experience and expertise through years of volunteer service will be a key element of this presentation.

Today we hear a lot about the need for evangelization and mission. But how do you, as an educator, ensure that Jesus’ mission is passed on to the next generation? This workshop explores: 1) practical ways you can develop a stronger sense of the joy of mission in your own spirituality and teaching and 2) strategies for you to fire up your students (and their parents) to become more engaged in their own baptismal call to participate in the mission of Jesus. Sea-34 Holocaust, Genocide, Today
While traditionally considered a lesson in history, it is through the study of the Holocaust that we can learn about bystanders, the dangers of intolerance, and the difference one person can make. Participants of this session will receive practical tools to help them teach about this often sensitive and overwhelming subject. In this 75 minute session, participants will have the opportunity to view the short film, “With My Own Eyes: Holocaust Genocide Today” and will discuss best practices for teaching the Holocaust. Participants will receive free resources, including a copy of the film, from the Holocaust Center.

Sea-35 Transforming the Difficult Child: The Nurtured Heart Approach - Overview
The Nurtured Heart Approach (NHA) is an extremely effective parenting approach pioneered by Howard Glasser, MA. Originally designed for challenging, difficult or spirited children, experience shows that it works beautifully with all children. The NHA is designed to teach parents and teachers new ways to approach behavior, so that success becomes the rule rather than the exception. Parents and teachers are taught how to set clear rules and give consistent consequences to negative behaviors. The heart of the approach however, focuses on providing a loving environment in which each child’s strengths, talents and abilities are nurtured. Parents and teachers are thrilled by the transformation that takes place in their child, in their family and in their classroom after utilizing this easily mastered approach.

This workshop will give a rationale from Scripture, life, and recent research for using art as a central part of the elementary and middle school curriculum. Sea-42 STEM Learning Labs on the Golf Course (Science)
The learning labs for teachers will provide an overview of First Green's program including sample lesson plans on our website. It will have brief two brief professionally developed videos for a total time of about 10 minutes with time for questions and answers. We will describe how STEM learning takes place on golf courses, and then involve the teachers in two or three of the actual learning labs where they are participants and our First Green team will teach the labs just as we do on golf courses. Teachers will do the labs and talk with the presenters about how this fits with their grade level curriculum. Each lab takes about 20 minutes.
