• Rice Bowl message on Mardi Gras

Solidarity Will Transform the World” (Operation Rice Bowl theme for 2010)

    Friends,
As a lead-in for Lent, my computer’s screen background is an Operation Rice Bowl photo of children in an overseas community. Because of Rice Bowl - because of your work to help your community to pray, learn, fast and give - these children are able to attend school and be nourished in mind and body.
Pope Benedict speaks of our own school, a “school of charity and solidarity” he calls it – the Eucharist. The Rice Bowl program is a well-used “lesson plan for this school” in each of our parishes and in many of our schools; Catholic Relief Services has told us we are a leader among all of the dioceses in this country regarding participation in, and response to, Operation Rice Bowl. You make that solidarity happen, and we in the Missions Office are very grateful.

We hope you have all the materials your community needs; let us know if you need more.
We hope you have found the various resources helpful for you and for sharing among volunteers and staff. Let us know if you if you have any requests or questions – or “good news” to share about what you are planning or experience this Lent!

Feed the hungry (Matthew 25:35,37,42) is an ethical imperative for the universal Church, as she responds to the teachings of her Founder, the Lord Jesus, concerning solidarity and the sharing of goods.”
    – Benedict XVI, Caritas in Veritate
