• ELA Standards Review Committee Update

We held our first meeting Friday, February 7, post Seahawk-frenzy! Perhaps with almost the same enthusiasm, the 14 committee members began the review process with energy and commitment in getting this work to the goal line! What do we promise?

By January 2015, after 4 meetings throughout this calendar year, the ELA Review Committee hopes to have a process in place for principals and teachers to access on-line at our website with the following in place:

    • Links to the ELA Standards
    • Archdiocesan K-12 view of the ELA standards
    • “Glossary of Terms” inherent in the ELA Standards
    • Links to “Committee Recommended Resources” related to terms
    • Committee developed “ELA Common Mid-Year Assessments with Rubrics and Anchor Papers”
    • Textbook recommendations
    • A Review Protocol for textbook adoptions

It is important to define at this point what the responsibility is for the Office for Catholic Schools, and what remains the responsibility of each the individual Catholic Schools.

    Office for Catholic Schools
    Work of the Committee
    Individual Catholic Schools
    Yearly Curriculum Review
    • Define standards Pre-K - 12
    • Identify and uplift best practices
    • Develop common formative mid-year assessments
    • Determine common end-of-year summative assessment
    • Offer common unit design template and examples
    • Seek consensus on standards for reporting progress
    • Provide access (website, trainings) to ELA Committee Work Review
    • Clearly understand grade level standards
    • Develop the curriculum to meet the standards
    • Create and share integrated units using the template
    • Differentiate to meet the needs of all students
    • Assess progress
    • Provide time for articulation in grade levels

As schools begin their self-studies for the accreditation process, this work will be very helpful. I thank the committee members for their willingness to dive into this important work!

Please note that the Educational Leadership Summer Session titled, “Delving Further into the ELA Common Core Standards with Diverse Learners in Mind” fits beautifully within the framework of this curricular review! Exciting times!
