Teacher Excellence Day (TED) 2014
“Strength to Strength”
October 3, 2014
Bellarmine Prep and Bishop Blanchet
Emails were sent to all the recommended presenters for our TED 2014. So far, I have received 9 presentation applications! I am excited by this response! From the 2014 evaluation and registration data, teachers told us loud and clear that they prefer teacher-to-teacher presentations. Thank you for your nominations! I have also received some presenters from the second email to all teachers. Reviewed and accepted presentations will work with Margi… to fine tune the “course” description. Margi’s experience as an auction catalogue writer will assist the presenters in capturing the participants with persuasive course descriptions!
We have changed the format of the day, again responding to the teacher evaluations. We will begin our day with Mass at both locations; the key-note will be 30 minutes in length featuring Fr. Rowan who will speak to the Strategic Plan and the implication for teachers. We will feature two break-out sessions and time for articulation at grade levels. Yes, we were able to fine-tune the schedule to accommodate these changes!

“Further Implementing the Common Core State Standards in ELA with Diverse Learners in Mind”
We have 243 registered for our conference. A total of 42 schools are represented, with 34 coming from the Archdiocese of Seattle and 8 schools from the dioceses of Portland, Yakima and Boise.
Books: Two books have been ordered for this conference, and unfortunately, many were back-ordered. So when all books have been delivered, we will send out an email to all registered schools to make pick-up arrangements for participants. Stayed tuned.
Homework for an additional 6 clock hours: The focus this year will be on Unit Plans. Therefore, the texts should help us focus on ELA standards and strategies to widen our focus with diverse learners in mind. Therefore, the homework will be a unit plan! The texts should help us in the creation of the unit, as well as the work we undertake with Dr. Susan Abelien, our presenter. Our homework will be due post conference, June 26. More information coming your way in the June confirmation letter.
English Language Arts Review Committee
Click here for the Implementation Grid for the ELA Common Core. In January, when the ELA review is rolled out, this grid will be complete with a process and links to support a principal and staff in the implementation process. Additionally, click here for the Professional Learning Communities Process with regards to ELA implementation. Many of us have started Professional Learning Communities, and many are just taking the first steps. This process outlines the steps in using the PLC’s to advance the understanding of the Common Core ELA. The committee will resume meeting next year: Friday, October 17 and Tuesday, November 18.
Rethink Mathematics – Torrey Volk
Today, you will find the link to Rethink Mathematics resources. When you click on this link, explore the many opportunities for your teachers, most importantly in the administrative link, Torrey shares with us the common instructional framework. Additionally, she has posted unit plans giving an overview of the key concepts and key terms along with the unit standards K-8. Please note the at this time pre-kindergarten and advanced 8th grade are in development.
Torrey will be sending an email to inquire if you would like your teachers to take the next step in meeting approximately 4 times a year in grade-level groups to dig deeper into strategies and understanding best practices. There is a $100 fee for this per teacher, and would require the principal to allowing an early dismissal for the teacher – depending on the location of the PLC meeting. The two hour meetings will be scheduled between 2:00 and 5:00 with input from the participants.
