• Missionary Institute 2015 – Pilot Project

We have lift-off! Many thanks to the following teachers, students and schools for participating in the Missionary Institute Pilot Project:

    Teacher and Schools Partners
Dan Sarlitto – Sacred Heart School, Bellevue
Holly Rogers – Our Lady of Lourdes School, Vancouver
Tracey Yackley and Judy Barrere– Holy Family School, Kirkland
Dr. Ben Curtis – Poverty Education Center at SU
Kevin Foy, Kathy Keefe – Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers
Kelly Hickman, J.L. Drouhard – Missions Office
Joe Cotton – St. James Cathedral
Kristin Dixon – Office for Catholic Schools

With support and formation from our partners, the four teachers and their 7th grade students led the way for our first Missionary Institute. What did we accomplish?

    1. Created 3 unit plans with the guiding questions:
    a. Encounter - Who is my neighbor?
    b. Disturbance - Who is showing love to my neighbor?
    c. Response – How am I called to serve my neighbor?

    2. Created the outline for and participated in the Missionary Institute at Seattle University last week on Wednesday, March 11. Students had time to get to know one another, share in additional formation, and finally offered their projects in a presentation to the large group for peer review and affirmation!

What happens now? We will share the units with you at our Teacher Excellence Day in October. We hope that you will find that the units are truly “project-based learning” encouraging students to dive into real-world issues and discover how each of us is called to be the face and hands of Christ.
