• Wireless networking for the classroom

Most of our schools have already installed some type of wireless network. The size and pricing of these systems varies a great deal depending on their intended use. Some schools may be using a small consumer-grade wireless network that was originally installed for occasional email and web browsing for teachers and guests. Some schools have already funded a larger commercial grade wireless system and are using it constantly by all students and faculty. Whether you are in the former or latter group, it may be time to consider a centrally managed network product such as the Cisco Meraki system.
As is the case with any major IT expenditure, proper planning is critical. We should not only consider current requirements but add a projection of requirements over the next 3 to 5 years. Let’s break the requirements into the following categories:

    Function and Manageability
Function: The wireless system needs to deliver Internet access to all devices all the time in all the locations that the teachers and students work. The construction in our schools presents challenges to the situation that most businesses do not face. Sometimes it is worthwhile to hire a professional network design team to perform a site survey and recommend the appropriate product and its placement. Another critical function that can be performed by the wireless system is web content filtering. The Meraki system also works in tandem with several brands of web content filtering that may obviate the need for supporting a complex security firewall or software filter.
Manageability – We have all had the experience of waiting for a repair person to arrive to fix a critical problem at the school. Wireless systems by their very nature are prone to occasional problems as a result of signal loss, wiring and other factors. Several schools have adopted or are considering a Meraki cloud based Wi-Fi systems for classrooms. Cloud based systems can provide operational advantages. They eliminates the headache of backing up the configuration and the restriction of having to be on site for most maintenance activities. In the Meraki cloud management design, wireless service monitoring and alarming is provided at by the control system off site. A central team could provide technical support more quickly and the school’s technology support person could readily reach out to other schools for troubleshooting or for instance, sharing access filter policy strategies.

Now is a good time to plan your wireless network project. Starting in the spring allows time to consider your product options and budget and schedule the installation this coming summer.
