Description: The Cathedral Service Immersion is a justice-oriented service retreat for 7th grade classes in Catholic schools. Students will host a dinner for homeless guests at the Cathedral Kitchen and reflect on the mission of our Catholic Church. The immersion experience includes the following features:
- Games & Icebreakers
- Three group sessions: Jesus’ Dream, Solidarity with the Poor, and The Body of Christ
- A tour of St. James Cathedral
- Direct service in the Cathedral Kitchen
- Prayer experiences
Pope Francis is continually reminding us that we are called to be missionary disciples in the world. He is further calling for kinship and closeness with the poor, something our comfort zones often prohibit. The Cathedral Service Immersion empowers 7th grade students to actively live the Gospel through direct interaction with marginalized people in an urban setting. In addition, it will familiarize them with their cathedral church and broaden their understanding of what it means to BE CHURCH in the world.

Facilitator: This experience will be facilitated by Joe Cotton, the cathedral youth minister. Students will additionally be supported by members of the Cathedral Kitchen staff and volunteers.
Cost: It costs $665 to operate the Cathedral Kitchen for one day. 7th grade classes are invited to raise this amount prior to the immersion experience via bake sales, school dances, etc. The entire meal will be “on them,” allowing them to not only provide the food, but serve it as well. Adjustments to the fundraising goal can be made as needed. All proceeds go directly to the Cathedral Kitchen.
