“Catholic schools have the enviable mission of identifying, supporting, nurturing, and fully revealing the human potential of all students.” – Beyond Academics, James M. Frabutt
There was a time when the good sisters in a Catholic school simply went into the neighborhoods to increase enrollment. They weren’t thinking about tuition or commitment hours. The sisters had a mission, and that mission was God’s mission, “Go and preach the Gospel to all nations.”
Last week, during our Educational Institute, Dr. Frabutt grounded us again in the mission of Catholic schools, more completely stated in the quote above. And it is an “enviable mission” as we are called to educate the whole child. As Catholics, we believe that we are each made in the image and likeness of God – each of us with unique gifts and challenges. So, to remind ourselves of those roots in the good sisters work, we seek to open our doors to all.
How do we: open the door? One child at a time, and with a willingness to learn and partner with the family. Find the following resources to help you navigate this work in your school. If you didn’t have the opportunity to attend the summer institute, please note that the materials attached below are for your perusal and use.
REGISTRATIONS
Unit Design Workshop
Gwen Gievett, Writing Consultant, led the first Unit Design workshop hosted at St. George in Seattle. One of the attendees, Margaret Whethem from Holy Rosary School in Seattle, offered this recommendation, “The Unit Design Workshop inspired me to be more intentional as I plan each unit, starting with the end in mind. I learned how to convert standards from the curriculum into clear objectives for the unit, and how to move from asking non-essential questions to an essential questions as I plan how to teach the standards. The workshop oriented me more towards being a teacher of skills than content. In addition, it would be much easier for another teacher to either take over or sub for me with units designed and laid out on the template we were given. The three hours were an invaluable time of learning.” What a terrific nod of approval from a fellow teacher in the field. Please be sure to sign up for one of the many opportunities available.
