    2016 - 2017 School Year Immunization Requirements
    Department of Health Update

Many of you are starting to gear up for the next school year. Please find below information about school year 2016-17 immunization requirements for preschool/child care and school attendance.

Preschool and child care immunization requirements:
    · The new 2016-17 Vaccines Required for Child Care/Preschool Attendance chart for parents and child care providers has been posted on our
    website.
    · There are no changes to the preschool/child care immunization requirements from the current year.

    School immunization requirements:
    · Please encourage parents to print their own child’s Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) through a new web portal called MyIR. This secure online system pulls data from the WA Immunization Information System (IIS) and will auto populate the CIS with immunizations contained in the IIS. Parents just need to print, sign, and submit the CIS to the school or preschool/child care. Refer parents to our
website for more information about this new system.
    · The new 2016-17 Vaccines Required for School Attendance chart for
parents and school staff has also been posted on our website. We encourage you to include the simpler parent chart in your registration packets.

The main school immunization requirement changes for the 2016-17 school year include:
    1. Varicella requirement
    a. Two doses of varicella vaccine will be required for all students in K-12th grade.
    2. Polio requirement
    a. K-5th grade: the final dose of IPV, given on or after August 7, 2009, must be given on or after 4 years of age AND a minimum interval of 6 months from the previous dose.
    3. Hepatitis B requirement

In case you aren’t already aware of a great resource, please check out the Immunization Toolkit:
http://immstoolkit.org/. This toolkit was developed with a grant from the Group Health Foundation by the Spokane Regional Health District in collaboration with Tacoma Pierce County Health Dept, school nurses, School Nurse Corps Administrators, OSPI, and DOH. The information in the toolkit is intended to assist both medical and non-medical staff at schools and childcares to establish immunization recordkeeping and documentation workflow processes, or modify existing processes. The toolkit is especially helpful for new staff orienting to immunization requirements and immunization record review.

Thank you so much for all you do to improve compliance with immunization requirements! We know how many hours you spend doing this work in addition to many other demands on your time. We are very thankful for your persistence, attention to detail, and desire to keep students healthy!
    Happy New Year to everyone!
