Pope Francis names Oklahoma priest as Seattle Auxiliary Bishop
Seattle –The Vatican today announced that Pope Francis has appointed Msgr. Daniel Henry Mueggenborg as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Seattle. Msgr. Mueggenborg is a priest of the Diocese of Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he has served as pastor of Christ the King Church since 2011.
“It is with deep joy that I share this good news,” said Archbishop Sartain, who has known Msgr. Mueggenborg for the past 12 years. “His warmth and affability, coupled with his pastoral experience and competence, will be great gifts to the Archdiocese of Seattle.”
Daniel Mueggenborg was born in Okarche, Oklahoma, April 15, 1962. He was ordained a priest July 14, 1989, in Tulsa at Holy Family Cathedral. He will be ordained to the episcopacy on Wednesday, May 31, at 2 p.m. in St. James Cathedral.
“I am humbled by Pope Francis’ appointment to serve as an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Seattle,” Msgr. Mueggenborg said. “These recent days have been filled with prayer both in gratitude for the Holy Father’s decision and in petition for the strength and grace to fulfill the duties of this ministry.”
The bishop-designate received a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Oklahoma State University in 1984, studied pre-theology at St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana and earned degrees in theology and biblical theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He has served as pastor of three parishes in Tulsa, held several diocesan leadership positions and was a faculty member of the Pontifical North American College in Rome.
