Science Committee Information

The Science Committee meet June 1 to finalize the Science Tool-Kit and accompanying resources. At this time, we want to share with you the survey, (see attachment) that was completed by the science teachers as part of our process. From the survey results we gained insight into the following needs:

• professional development - regardless of the resource publisher
• accompanying materials for labs
• time in the schedule to plan for lab set-up

While this information may not be a surprise, the committee wanted to emphasize these needs when making the resource selection. As you can see from the attachment, two resources were selected: Carolina Biological and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. While these two were selected, they are not mandatory for our Archdiocese. These choices represent the committees reflection on the survey needs and the professional development that each provides. We also want to note that schools may, in fact, want to choose two publishers to meet the needs of elementary and middle school.

We plan on hosting a Saturday inservice next fall for science teachers to learn more about the NGSS and the soon-to-be published tool-kit. Two members of our committee will meet this summer to polish and make available to the schools by August 1, 2017.

I thank each of the members for their time, commitment and positive energy each brought to this task. We are indeed blessed by exceptional teachers who are willing to share.
