I’m excited to announce the Global Competence Institute to be held on August 11 at Fort Vancouver High School, funded by a Multi-State grant to the Washington State Coalition for International Education from the Longview Foundation. Our partner states are West Virginia and New Jersey. The institute is free, but please register in advance so we can plan for refreshments and clock hours. The event is appropriate for educators from all levels, as well as community members and students. Below is the description from OSPI Events Manager. We will have a more descriptive flyer available soon. Please pass on this announcement to your colleagues and encourage them to register.
In addition to the breakout sessions listed below, I am working on plans for meetings on the K-16 Flagship model for language programs, with a special focus on Russian and Chinese. These are programs that aim to get students to Advanced Level proficiency by the time they enter college and will be of particular interest to schools with heritage learners or plans to start language immersion programs.
To register, go to OSPI Events Manager or follow this link:

Description: |
Teaching and assessing student work that addresses issues of global significance — around the world or in students’ own backyards — are essential to a world-class education system. The global marketplace is real, and today’s schools must prepare students to participate, interact, and thrive in it. The more our students know about recognizing the challenges and opportunities of an interconnected world, the better they will be able to work in it and improve it. Our students’ well-being, the vitality of our communities, and the welfare of our nation depend on it. This one-day institute will show teachers how to build global competence in students across the curriculum while contributing to the development of EdSteps, an innovative approach to assessment being developed by the Council of Chief State School Officers.
