Thank you to the over 180 educators from Washington and Oregon who participated in the Fourth Annual Northwest Catholic Educational Leadership Institute at Seattle University on June 22-24, 2010. With 47 schools represented, the program on "Formative Assessment-Linking Instruction to Assessment" provided an opportunity for rich planning and conversations about how to continue to deepen our understanding of how we know what our students know. The presenters, Dr. Laura Lipton and Peggy Olcott, shared the fundamentals of formative assessment–how to pair assessment with classroom instruction and then how to use the data gained to improve student learning. Protocols for questioning strategies and guidelines for having productive conversations with school faculty about student data were identified as strengths of the presentations. |
The Institute is a reflection of the ongoing partnership of the Archdiocese of Seattle Catholic Schools Department and Seattle University. The year-long work of the planning committee–Dr. Susan Bacon, Dr. Kathy Carr, Dr. Diane M. Cronin, Eric Downing, Patrick Feist, Margaret Klein, Lisa O’Leary, Kay Purcell and Dr. Michael Silver–is appreciated and the planning is beginning on next years’ Institute, which will be held on June 21-23, 2011.
Kay Purcell, Assistant Superintendent, Catholic Schools Department.
