Dear Colleagues:
I am hoping that our pastors, parish priests, pastoral life directors, campus ministers and principals will pay particular attention to the contents of this letter. As you may be aware, the Archdiocese of Seattle is beginning its catechetical training roll-out towards the Advent 2011 implementation of the new Roman Missal. Kindly note the following:
First, the current Catholic Schools Department states in policy 2.1 (C) that: “The principal shall designate a staff member or qualified volunteer as a coordinator of liturgy who is trained in the norms and preparation of the liturgy. The Liturgy Office will provide assistance to schools for training and resources.”
Second, the Liturgy Office is offering a series of workshops around the Archdiocese for parishes and schools in assisting them in implementing the new Roman Missal. A wide variety of parish leadership will be in attendance at these workshops. The times and dates for these workshops are attached. The person you have already designated for liturgy will need release time and substitute help in order to attend one of these workshops. The person you have designated in your building for liturgy can attend any workshop at any location. But note, that in order to fulfill their responsibility in their area, they must attend one of these workshops. Registration for these workshops is also attached.
Third, Dr. Anne Frederick from our Office of Catholic Faith Formation will be teaching in some of these workshops and has been on the committee working under the direction of Father Steve Sallis, who is overseeing the catechetical efforts toward the Roman Missal implementation. Should you need further assistance or have questions, you may contact her at anne.frederick@seattlearch.org .
Next, if you would like general information regarding the Roman Missal, I would recommend you review the website of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops. The link is http://www.usccb.org/romanmissal/.
Finally, I have provided a link to an article by Archbishop Chaput of Denver Colorado on our website. It is a lecture he delivered at the seminary in Chicago where some of our men are studying to prepare for the priesthood. I found his lecture helpful background reading.
Again, I thank you for your attention to this important matter and hope that you will find ways in your local parish school or high school to uplift this important moment for our Church’s English-language liturgy.
With every best wish and blessing,
Yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Joseph J. Tyson
Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General
Superintendent of Catholic Schools
