• Curriculum News - October 12

    Dear Principals,

NCEA DATA COLLECTION IS UNDERWAY! Thank you to the 52 schools who have started their annual NCEA data collection and special thank you to Fran Ennis, Principal of Archbishop Murphy High School, who was first to complete the task! (Bishop says, “You’re the BEST!” ) Please know that instructional materials and assessment sections are intended to be filled out this year as comprehensively as you wish and then this data will always be available to you and your delegates to update as needed. Thank you for investing your time in this tool this year. Our NCEA due date is Wednesday, October 27th. Thank you!

Webinars & Public Forums Offered by OSPI: These information-packed webinars and public forums provide an outstanding opportunity to talk with us and ask questions about the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). We’ll cover the CCSS initiative, talk about the new standards and a proposed implementation timeline should the CCSS be adopted formally. We’ll also ask for input on what schools, districts and teachers would need to transition the new standards into their classroom before the 2014-2015 school year.

These sessions slate time for a full discussion of the work of the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium. The consortium will develop a comprehensive assessment system with the Common Core State Standards as its foundation. Learn about the SMARTER Balanced Assessment approach, and how it will provide teachers an accurate measure of student progress for all learners, including those with disabilities, English language learners, and our low and high academic performers.

WORLD YOUTH DAY IS COMING! Summer 2011 Madrid August 16-21, 2011
“Planted and Built Up in Jesus Christ, Firm in the Faith”
Saint Paul - World Youth Day 2011 Theme

World Youth Day is an unbelievable weeklong spiritual journey where pilgrims from all over the world unite to share their faith. The week includes prayer, song, concerts, drama, sharing, liturgy, catechesis, and an unforgettable vigil and closing mass with the Holy Father. In 1984, the Pope John Paul II invited young people from all over the world to participate in a pilgrimage at the very first World Youth Day. Since then it has been held in Argentina (’87), Spain (’89), Poland (’91), U.S. (’93), Philippines (’95), France (’97), Italy (’00), Canada (’02), Germany (’05), and Australia (’08). Young people ages 16-35 are all invited to attend World Youth Day 2011 which will be held in Madrid, Spain, August 16-21, 2011.

**** Please consider: If your school/parish is organizing an official travelling group, please let me know so we can network groups so they are aware of who are our pilgrims from the Archdiocese of Seattle.

    Respectfully submitted,
    Sandra Barton Smith
