| Global Classroom: China's Great Leap Into the 21st Century Monday, November 8, 2010 4:30-7:30 pm Confucius Institute Education Center at Chief Sealth International High School in Seattle 2600 Thistle St, Seattle, WA 98106 "Mega" seems to be the word to describe China these days, with its mega population and mega economy. Recently BBC reported on China's massive development across many fields including infrastructure. Last year China did not have any high speed trains while this year there are more in China than all of Europe. By the end of next year there will be more trains whizzing across China at 380 km per hour than across the rest of the world! Of course, with enormous and rapid development come serious pollution and crippling traffic jams. This September 10,000 trucks jammed the Beijing-Lhasa highway for nine days! Without a doubt, phenomenal change is happening all across China. What does this mean for China? What does this mean for the world? Although many journalists write about how the US should fear China's rise, come to this workshop ready to discuss how China and the US can benefit from a joint harmonious relationship. If you have heard Sidney Rittenberg speak, you know to clear your calendar for November 8th. If you have not yet had the privilege, here is your chance to listen to one of our region's most respected China hands discuss one of the most incredible periods in China's long history: TODAY! Rittenberg was 24 years old when the U.S. Army sent him to China in 1945 as a Chinese language interpreter. A year later he stayed on to work as an interpreter for a UN relief agency. During his 35 years in China he not only witnessed momentous events from the Communist Revolution to China's opening to the West in the 1970s, he also endured 16 years in solitary confinement on false charges of being a spy. Sidney has met every major Chinese leader from Mao Zedong to Jiang Zemin. He and his wife, Yulin, returned to the United States in 1980, and are highly regarded consultants to businesses, government agencies, and public figures active in China. Author of one of Tese's all-time favorite books, The Man Who Stayed Behind, Sidney has just returned from spending the summer in China experiencing first-hand some of these mega developments. He will discuss these changes describing not only the social benefits, but also the environmental, social, and political challenges facing China in the 21st century. Please join the World Affairs Council's Global Classroom program and the Confucius Institute of the State of Washington in welcoming Sidney and Yulin to Seattle on November 8th. This is the first of three World Affairs Council Global Classroom workshops sponsored by the Confucius Institute during the 2010-11 school year.
