• RCL-Benziger Family Life program

    October14, 2010

Dear School Pastors, School Pastoral Coordinators and Principals:

The updated RCL-Benziger Family Life program has been reviewed and accepted for use in our Catholic schools and comes after a careful review by the Office of Catholic Faith formation. The updated series integrates new material, enlarges resources and provides a variety of new media presentations through web services. The RCL-Benziger Family Life program has been the recommended resource in parishes and schools for the last 15 years. The online link for your review is: http://www.rclweb.com/FamilyLife/FLIndex.html.

The new RCL-Benziger Family Life program has integrated Catholic moral/ethical principles to support current safety programs in the schools. This material will be supportive of presentations on safety in school environments but never replaces the Safe Environment programs mandated by the Archdiocese of Seattle.

The RCL-Benziger Family Life has been the resource distributed at the school parent meetings associated with the school’s compliance with Formation for Love and Chastity. This year a committee consisting of members from the Schools Department, the Office of Catholic Faith Formation and other leadership will be reviewing and developing a plan to better assist schools in offering family life programs. The new RCL-Benziger Life program may be an asset in developing some more user-friendly models for our schools.

Thank you for the many ways you have supported the teaching of the Catholic faith and especially the moral life in our schools. I continue to pray for you to experience the Love and Grace of God in your daily service to schools, parishes and the wider world.

With every best wish and blessing,

    Yours in Christ,

    Most Reverend Joseph J. Tyson
    Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General
    Superintendent of Catholic Schools

I am very pleased with their new program. I worked with Father William Treacy this summer on the theme of compassion. I then wove together the Family Life Program with the theme of Compassion and created 5 lessons for each grade using the Family Life Program as my guide. My thought is that if we can indeed restore a healthy attitude toward families, marriage and sexuality, our children will be better equipped to be persons of compassion.

Kathy, thanks for the little endorsement of the new materials! I am hoping to hear from folks using the new materials AND I would love to know how folks are working with the parents, what they believe their best practices are with parents. I'd also like to know how the schools can become a resource for all the adults of the parish regardless of whether they have children there or not. So hopefully other folks will chime in on what's happening in their local parishes and schools with regards to the use and support of these materials for youth and for their parents. Blessings! +Bishop Tyson
