POPE JOHN PAUL II HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO COMPETE IN NATIONAL HISTORY BOWL AND BEE

On Saturday, March 19, three freshmen and three sophomores from Pope John Paul II High School competed at the JV level in the first annual State History Bowl and Bee in Snoqualmie, Washington, qualifying for Nationals on April 16 and 17 in Washington DC.

The JPII team placed 2nd in the JV bracket of the State History Bowl. Additionally, one sophomore and one freshman advanced individually to the semifinals in the History Bee. Says history teacher and advisor, Stephen Holland, “I am incredibly proud of our students. They put so much time and effort into this event and validated our work in the classroom with a truly stellar performance. I am blessed as a teacher to have students who are so passionate about history.”

These six JPII students will travel to Washington DC in April to compete in the National History Bowl and Bee against teams from high schools across the nation. The National competition will take place at museums and sites of historic interest throughout our nation’s capital, including:

    • Mt. Vernon
    • the Smithsonian National Spy Museum
    • the Smithsonian National Museum of American History
    • the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian
    • the Goethe Institute
    • the National Museum of Crime and Punishment
    • the International Spy Museum
    • the Newseum
JPII has established a fund to assist students who might otherwise be unable to meet registration and travel expenses for academic competitions. Contributions can be made by mail, at the JPII office, or by calling (360) 438-7600.
