In celebration of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers’ Centennial Year, Maryknoll has partnered with the Catholic Schools Department and the Missions Office of the Archdiocese of Seattle to introduce our first annual “Youth on Mission” contest. We invite students and class groups to submit videos, photographs, and/or artistic entries that answer the question: “How am I a missionary?”
As Catholic school educators, the mission of the Church – to witness and proclaim the love of Christ to the world, to acknowledge the dignity of all people, and to work for peace and justice – is central to the formation of your students. You instill mission ideals in your students already by integrating Catholic Social Teaching into your curriculum, embracing the notions that, “Each person is sacred,” “We care for the poor and vulnerable,” and that, “Solidarity is our call; we are the keepers of our brothers and sisters.” Mission is the driving and recurring theme of our Christian faith, highlighted also in the Archdiocesan religion curriculum, which notes that, “The Church is a community of Christ’s disciples,” and that, “Christ calls us to be… committed to praising God and proclaiming the Good News through loving service of neighbor and the promotion of justice.”
Now is an opportunity for your students to show how they live out this call – how they are missionary in their own lives. You can help students by having them brainstorm how they do the following, at home and around the world:
- Show love and concern for others, locally and globally
- Share their faith with others
- Work to create peace and justice
- Pray for others
- Raise awareness about inequality
- Care for creation
- Respect other people and their cultures
Thank you for your commitment to education, and for your dedication to living the peace and love of Christ.
Sincerely,
Kevin Foy, Mission Promotion Coordinator
